UNILAG VC cheers team to victory over Ugandan University

Posted : 25 September 2024

Prof. Folashade Ogunsola, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), was the number one cheerleader, supporting her team to a 2-1 victory over the hard-fighting Nkumba University of Uganda at the UNILAG Sports Complex, Yaba.

After the match, Prof. Ogunsola described the team’s performance as fantastic.

“These boys' performance was fantastic, and we need to praise them. It is not easy playing under such pressure, and I understand,” she said.

Team UNILAG defeated Nkumba University of Uganda on Monday in the men’s football event of the ongoing 11th All Africa University Games (FASU) in Lagos.

Chisom Odilli opened the scoring in the seventh minute of the game, putting host UNILAG ahead.

As the first half ended 1-0, the boys from Uganda came back strong in the second half to equalize through Henri Mukasa in the 52nd minute.

Knowing that a draw would see them through, Team Uganda employed delay tactics, but this did not deter UNILAG, who were desperately searching for the winning goal.

Their persistence paid off in the 87th minute, as Isaac Olanipekun rose to connect with a header from his teammate, nodding in the winning goal for his team.

The Lagos team had lost their first match 0-1 to the University for Development Studies, Ghana.

Coach of Team Lagos, Oluwadun Babatunde, said that it wasn’t easy being the host team.

“We thank God Almighty for the victory today. Before this win, the buzz around town was about FASU gold.

"The management of the university and some prominent personalities strongly believe in Team UNILAG. I told the Director of Sports yesterday that Argentina lost their first game in the World Cup, but they reached the final and won.

"The same happened to Ivory Coast during AFCON; they lost to Nigeria but went on to win the cup.

“The boys were completely down yesterday. Half of them didn’t even have dinner. That showed they were upset with themselves for losing to a team that we dominated.”

Babatunde added, “We had our chances, and football is a very spiritual game. If you don’t take them, you will pay for it, and we paid for not converting our chances in the first game.

"We are the home team, and the pressure is on us. Anyone from the first line to the center-forward can score."

Team UNILAG is in Group B, alongside Nkumba University (Uganda), the University for Development Studies (Ghana), the University of Jos (Nigeria), and the University of Kankan (Guinea).

Team UNILAG will play its next game against Team UNIJOS.
