Tottenham's Rodrigo Bentancur has received a seven-match domestic ban from the Football Association for using a racial slur directed at his teammate, Son Heung-min. The punishment, which also includes a £100,000 fine and mandatory participation in an educational program, was handed down following comments Bentancur made during a television appearance in Uruguay in June. Despite denying the charge, an independent FA regulatory commission found the midfielder guilty during a hearing.
The 27-year-old will be sidelined from domestic competitions until December 26, missing critical Premier League fixtures against Manchester City, Liverpool, and Chelsea. Additionally, he will be unavailable for Tottenham's League Cup quarter-final clash against Manchester United. However, Bentancur remains eligible to play in Tottenham's Europa League matches during this period.
Bentancur has made 15 appearances for Tottenham this season, scoring his first goal of the campaign in a recent loss to Ipswich on November 11. The incident occurred during his personal time, which brought it under the FA's jurisdiction since he plays in England, setting a precedent different from that involving Chelsea's Enzo Fernandez.
In Fernandez's case, the Chelsea midfielder is currently under investigation by FIFA following an incident during international duty. The controversy arose from a video he posted that allegedly included a discriminatory chant during Argentina's Copa America celebrations. Unlike Bentancur's case, this matter is being handled by the French Football Federation and FIFA due to its international nature.
