Tottenham Appeals Rodrigo Bentancur’s Seven-Game Suspension for Comments About Son Heung-min

Posted : 21 November 2024

Tottenham Hotspur have formally appealed the seven-game suspension imposed on midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur following his controversial remarks about teammate Son Heung-min. The Football Association handed down the suspension on Monday, which will see Bentancur miss six Premier League matches and a League Cup quarterfinal against Manchester United.

The suspension stemmed from an interview Bentancur gave in June in his native Uruguay, where he made a racially insensitive comment about Son. His reference to Son's race led to the charge of aggravated misconduct. The 27-year-old was subsequently found guilty in September, but Tottenham has expressed their dissatisfaction with the severity of the punishment.

In a statement released on Wednesday, Tottenham accepted the misconduct charge but argued that the length of the suspension was excessive. "While we accept the guilty finding against Rodrigo by the independent regulatory commission, we believe the subsequent sanction is severe," the club said. Bentancur will remain suspended while the appeal is processed, with the club declining to make further comments during this period.

Bentancur had apologized for his comments on Instagram, acknowledging his mistake, and Son accepted the apology, emphasizing their brotherly relationship. Despite the controversy, Son stated that Bentancur did not intend to cause offense. In addition to the suspension, Bentancur was fined £100,000. The disciplinary panel acknowledged his apology and clean record, but still deemed his remarks to be seriously inappropriate.
