Thanasi Kokkinakis has undergone surgery in an attempt to resolve a persistent pectoral injury that has troubled him for some time. The Australian aggravated the issue during his five-set loss to Jack Draper in the second round of the Australian Open on January 15. The following day, he was forced to retire from a doubles match alongside Nick Kyrgios due to the same injury, prompting further concerns about his long-term fitness.
Sharing an update on social media, Kokkinakis described the injury as one of his toughest challenges yet, posting a photo of himself in a hospital bed with his right arm in a sling. He revealed that he had struggled with the problem for a while and had been searching for a solution, hoping the surgery would finally provide relief. The 28-year-old thanked his supporters for their encouragement as he embarked on his recovery journey.
Currently ranked 84th in the world, Kokkinakis reached a career-high singles ranking of 65th in 2023 and has claimed one ATP title. While injuries have hampered his singles career, he has found success in doubles, winning the 2022 Australian Open alongside Kyrgios. His return to competitive action will depend on how well he recovers from the procedure.
