Southampton has parted ways with manager Ivan Juric following their relegation from the Premier League, the club confirmed on Monday. The decision came after the team's 3-1 loss to Tottenham on Sunday, which sealed their relegation with seven matches still remaining in the season.
This early relegation marks an unfortunate record for the club, surpassing previous instances by Derby and Huddersfield, who were relegated with six games to spare in 2008 and 2019, respectively.
Juric, who took over in December after Russell Martin's departure, was tasked with salvaging a team already struggling. However, despite his efforts, the 49-year-old manager was able to secure only one league win, a 1-0 victory at Ipswich in February.
Southampton's form remained poor under his leadership, with the team losing seven of their last eight league matches, leaving them at the bottom of the table with a dismal record of 25 losses in 31 games.
In an official statement, Southampton expressed their gratitude towards Juric and his staff, acknowledging the difficult circumstances he faced. "Ivan came to Southampton at a tough time and was tasked with trying to improve a squad in a difficult situation.
Unfortunately, we haven't seen performances progress the way we had hoped," the statement read. Simon Rusk will now take over as interim manager for the remainder of the season, with former player Adam Lallana assisting him.
