The start of the men's 20-km race walk at the Paris Olympics was delayed by 30 minutes on Thursday due to a thunderstorm that struck early in the morning. Originally scheduled for 7:30 a.m. (0530 GMT), the race was rescheduled to 8 a.m. to accommodate the adverse weather conditions.
The race, which takes place along the Pont d'Iéna near the Eiffel Tower, is returning to Paris after being moved to Sapporo during the 2020 Tokyo Olympics to avoid the extreme heat in Tokyo. This change reflects the organizers' efforts to ensure a more favorable environment for the athletes.
In addition to the race walk delay, the men's triathlon had also faced disruptions. The event was postponed by a day due to rain, which impacted the water quality in the river Seine. Both the men's and women's triathlons were subsequently held on Wednesday, following adjustments made to address the water conditions.
