Nigerian-born Super Bowl champion, Ojomo, visits Gov. Sanwo-Olu

Posted : 04 March 2025

After visiting Nigerian President Bola Tinubu, Nigerian-born National Football League (NFL) star Morotoluwa Ojomo paid a courtesy call on Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Tuesday at Lagos House, Ikeja.

Lagos State Governor Sanwo-Olu then commended the Nigerian-born Ojomo for his achievements.

Ojomo, a defensive tackle for the Philadelphia Eagles, played a key role in his team’s Super Bowl LIX victory over the Kansas City Chiefs.

The 23-year-old, born in Lagos on August 15, 2001, moved to the United States in 2009 and played college football at Texas before being drafted by the Eagles in 2023.

During the visit, Sanwo-Olu lauded Ojomo’s journey from Lagos to the NFL, calling him a true “Omoluabi”—a Yoruba term symbolizing resilience, discipline, and excellence.

“Champion on the field, Omoluabi in the homeland.

It is a pleasure to welcome Morotoluwa Ojomo, Super Bowl champion and proud son of Nigeria, to Lagos House, Ikeja.

Seeing a young Nigerian achieve greatness on America’s biggest sporting stage is truly inspiring. Moro’s journey embodies the Omoluabi spirit, and his success is a testament to the boundless potential of Nigerians at home and in the diaspora.

Beyond the game, his visit serves as a powerful reminder to our youth that with hard work and determination, the world is within reach. Lagos will continue to support and celebrate its global ambassadors, ensuring that future generations have the platform and opportunities to excel.

Welcome home, Moro. Keep making Nigeria proud.”

Ojomo’s rise in the NFL has been impressive. He was drafted 249th overall by the Eagles in 2023 and signed his rookie contract on May 4. He made his NFL debut the same year and recorded his first tackle in Week 17 against the Arizona Cardinals.

In the 2024 season, Ojomo played in all 17 games, making one start. He delivered a standout performance in the Divisional Round win over the Los Angeles Rams, recording a sack. In Super Bowl LIX, he contributed two tackles, including one for loss, as the Eagles secured a 40-22 victory over the Chiefs.

Ojomo’s visit to Lagos underscores the growing influence of Nigerian-born athletes on the global stage, with his success serving as a source of inspiration for young Nigerians aspiring to reach the pinnacle of professional sports.
