Nigeria's Withdrawal Blamed for Africa Cup of Nations Qualifier Postponement

Posted : 15 October 2024

The Libyan Football Federation (LFF) has placed the blame for the postponement of Tuesday's Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in Benghazi on Nigeria, citing the visitors' refusal to participate due to alleged mistreatment upon their arrival. Nigerian players and officials were reportedly detained for over 16 hours at a locked airport, nearly 250 kilometers from their intended destination, after their charter flight was rerouted and landed in Bayda instead of Benghazi.

During this time, Nigerian representatives claimed they had no access to food, water, or any communication with Libyan officials, prompting them to decide against playing the match and to return to Nigeria on Monday. The LFF responded to these claims by urging Nigeria to show understanding, noting that their players had also encountered travel difficulties during their recent trip to Nigeria for a qualifier in Uyo, where they experienced significant delays.

In light of these events, the Confederation of African Football has referred the matter to its disciplinary board for review. The LFF expressed discontent with the actions taken by the Nigeria Football Federation and announced that it would pursue all legal avenues to safeguard the interests of their national team. The LFF also issued an apology to Libyan football fans and those involved in the match's arrangements, acknowledging the confusion caused by the situation.

Furthermore, the LFF highlighted that their players had faced adverse conditions when arriving in Nigeria for the previous qualifier, where their flight was delayed, resulting in a challenging journey. Despite these complications, Nigeria secured a 1-0 victory in that match and currently leads in the qualifying standings for the Africa Cup of Nations finals, set to take place in Morocco late next year, with the top two teams from each pool advancing to the finals.
