Napoli, the reigning Serie A champions, will face a setback in their title defense as Italian goalkeeper Alex Meret is set to be sidelined for at least a month due to a torn hamstring muscle.
The 26-year-old sustained the injury during the recent goalless draw against Monza, and subsequent scans revealed the extent of the damage to his left hamstring. While Napoli did not specify the exact recovery period, such injuries typically require a minimum of five weeks, leaving them without Meret for crucial matches.
In the absence of Meret, Napoli will turn to their second-choice goalkeeper, Pierluigi Gollini, for upcoming fixtures, including the Italian Super Cup clash against Fiorentina on January 18.
This injury compounds Napoli's challenges as they are already missing Nigerian forward Victor Osimhen, a key contributor to their Serie A title last season, who is on his way to the Africa Cup of Nations in the Ivory Coast starting on January 13.
Currently sitting eighth in the Italian league, Napoli faces a significant gap of 17 points behind leaders Inter Milan in the title race.
The club will hope for Meret's swift recovery as they navigate domestic competitions and aim to defend their title. Their Champions League campaign adds further urgency, with a crucial last 16 tie against Barcelona, scheduled for February 21 at home and the return leg in Spain on March 12.
