Montse Tome Denies "Punishing" Jenni Hermoso After Rubiales Scandal

Posted : 10 February 2025

Spain manager Montse Tome addressed the controversy surrounding the omission of Jenni Hermoso from her first squad after the 2023 Women’s World Cup final, following the scandal involving former football federation chief Luis Rubiales.

Tome denied that the decision was a punishment, clarifying that it was based on sporting factors. Hermoso had not played enough minutes with her Mexican club, Pachuca, and was facing significant media pressure after the incident.

Rubiales is currently facing trial for forcibly kissing Hermoso at the World Cup final, an act that sparked a global backlash against sexism in sport.

Prosecutors have charged him with sexual assault and coercion, with a request for a two-and-a-half-year prison sentence. Rubiales, who denies the charges, referred to the kiss as a "peck between friends" and rejected claims of coercion.

Tome, who took over as manager after Jorge Vilda was dismissed amid the scandal, emphasized that her decision was made to protect Hermoso from media pressure.

She also stressed that the decision to exclude Hermoso was made with the team's best interests in mind, as other players were in better form. Tome took full responsibility for the decision, noting that all squad choices are made consensually with her technical team.

The trial, which has drawn significant attention, continues, with Hermoso's brother alleging that Vilda had threatened her with professional and personal consequences if she did not participate in a video minimizing the incident with Rubiales. Hermoso has since returned to playing for Spain, but the scandal remains a shadow over the team's World Cup victory.
