Matheus Cunha Suspended for Two Matches Following Post-Match Altercation

Posted : 01 January 2025

Wolves forward Matheus Cunha has been handed a two-match suspension following an altercation with Ipswich Town backroom staff after his team's 2-1 Premier League loss on December 14.

The confrontation, which occurred at Molineux, involved Cunha clashing with Ipswich's security personnel, reportedly elbowing one individual and forcibly taking his glasses.

The incident unfolded in the aftermath of Wolves' defeat to their relegation rivals, a match marked by Rayan Ait-Nouri's red card and Jack Taylor’s late stoppage-time winner for Ipswich.

The Football Association charged Cunha for his actions, and the Brazilian forward admitted to the allegations. As a result, an independent commission imposed a two-match ban along with an £80,000 ($100,000) fine.

The FA has stated that detailed reasons for the sanction will be made available in due course. Cunha's suspension means he will miss Wolves’ upcoming Premier League match against Nottingham Forest on Monday as well as their FA Cup third-round clash at Bristol City.

Cunha's absence is a significant blow for Wolves, as the 25-year-old has been their standout performer this season, scoring 10 goals in 19 league appearances. Wolves are currently teetering near the relegation zone, sitting just one place and one point above safety.

The defeat to Ipswich also led to managerial changes, with Gary O’Neil being dismissed and replaced by Portuguese coach Vitor Pereira.
