Former Spanish football president Luis Rubiales is set to stand trial on Monday for forcibly kissing Jenni Hermoso, which sparked global outrage and led to his downfall. The incident, which occurred after Spain's women's national team won the World Cup in August 2023, saw Rubiales kiss Hermoso on the lips without consent while celebrating their victory.
The scandal has since made Hermoso a symbol in the fight against sexism in sports, generating widespread reflection both in Spain and internationally.
Prosecutors are seeking a two-and-a-half-year prison sentence for Rubiales, with one year for the sexual assault charge related to the kiss and an additional 18 months for allegedly pressuring Hermoso to downplay the incident.
Rubiales faces the trial alongside ex-national team coach Jorge Vilda and two former football federation officials, Ruben Rivera and Albert Luque, all of whom are accused of attempting to coerce Hermoso into covering up the scandal. The trial, expected to run until February 19, is being held in a court outside Madrid.
The controversy began when Rubiales kissed Hermoso during the medal ceremony following Spain’s World Cup victory against England. His actions were condemned as an abuse of power, especially after he dismissed the incident as a friendly gesture.
Despite intense backlash, including from Hermoso, who described the act as a "macho" violation, Rubiales refused to resign at first, even attacking "fake feminism." However, he eventually resigned in September 2023 after the investigation was launched.
