Liverpool's Mohamed Salah faces hamstring setback, out for weeks during Africa Cup of Nations

Posted : 23 January 2024

Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah is set for a spell on the sidelines due to a hamstring injury, as confirmed by assistant manager Pep Lijnders. The 31-year-old sustained the injury during Egypt's 2-2 draw with Ghana in the Africa Cup of Nations.

Lijnders expressed optimism about Salah's recovery, stating that the expected return is within three to four weeks, provided the rehabilitation progresses smoothly.

Liverpool emphasized the severity of the injury but outlined plans for an "intensive rehabilitation programme" with the aim of having Salah back in action for both club and country.

Following the injury, Salah watched Egypt secure a place in the last 16 with a dramatic 2-2 draw against Cape Verde. Liverpool announced that Salah would return to the club for rehabilitation, acknowledging that the injury was more serious than initially feared.

Jurgen Klopp, Liverpool's manager, supported the decision for Salah's rehabilitation at the club, with the possibility of rejoining Egypt if he recovers in time and they continue in the competition.

The injury setback comes as Liverpool and Egypt navigate the delicate balance of ensuring Salah's recovery while maintaining competitive aspirations in both domestic and international competitions.
