Lisandro Martinez Faces Extended Absence After Cruciate Knee Injury

Posted : 06 February 2025

Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez is facing the possibility of missing the rest of the season after sustaining an anterior cruciate knee ligament injury during the team's 2-0 defeat to Crystal Palace. The Argentina international was stretchered off in the second half following a challenge on Palace's Ismaila Sarr, with the injury appearing to be quite serious. The club confirmed on Thursday that assessments are ongoing to determine the appropriate treatment and rehabilitation timeline for the 27-year-old.

Martinez is also expected to miss Argentina's upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Uruguay and Brazil next month. His injury further deepens the list of absentees for Manchester United, which already includes midfielder Mason Mount and defenders Luke Shaw and Jonny Evans, leaving manager Ruben Amorim with limited defensive options.

The Argentine had been a key player for United this season, making 24 appearances and scoring two important goals, including the opener in a 2-2 draw at Liverpool and a match-winning goal against Fulham.

The injury marks a setback for Martinez, who had previously dealt with a medial collateral ligament injury last year that kept him out for two months. United, currently sitting 13th in the Premier League, are preparing to face Leicester City in the FA Cup fourth round on Friday, though they will have to contend with their growing injury concerns.
