Lionel Messi will not be in contention for another Ballon d'Or this year, as he was left off the list of nominees revealed on Wednesday. The announcement highlighted the prominence of players from Spain's Euro 2024-winning squad and Real Madrid's Champions League-winning team. Messi, who won his eighth Ballon d'Or last year, is notably absent from the 30-man shortlist, despite claiming the Copa America title with Argentina in July.
Now 37, Messi's omission marks the second time in recent years that he has missed out on a nomination, as he was also excluded in 2022 when Karim Benzema won the award. However, Messi made a triumphant return last year, securing the prestigious title after leading Argentina to World Cup victory in Qatar. His current stint with Inter Miami in Major League Soccer has not been enough to earn him a spot among the top footballers this time around.
Among the frontrunners for this year's Ballon d'Or is Brazilian star Vinicius Junior, who played a key role in Real Madrid's La Liga and Champions League triumphs last season. He is joined by five other Real Madrid teammates, including Jude Bellingham, Dani Carvajal, Toni Kroos, Antonio Ruediger, and Fede Valverde. Players from Spain's Euro 2024-winning team, such as Dani Olmo, Nico Williams, and Rodri, also feature heavily among the nominees.
In the women's category, Aitana Bonmati from Barcelona and Spain is seen as a strong contender to retain the Ballon d'Or. Other notable nominees include former winners Ada Hegerberg and Alexia Putellas, as well as five players from the United States' Olympic gold medal team. The winners will be announced at the ceremony in Paris on October 28.
