Ukrainian tennis player Lesia Tsurenko has announced her intention to take legal action against the Women's Tennis Association (WTA), accusing the organization of subjecting her to "moral abuse." The 35-year-old claims she experienced significant psychological distress, including panic attacks, after the WTA allegedly shielded a senior official who she says deliberately targeted her.
Tsurenko stated that her attempts to address the issue internally were met with apathy, leading to what she described as a "prolonged moral decline."
According to Tsurenko, the situation escalated to include emotional distress, a lack of transparency, and what she described as harassment directed at her support team in an effort to silence her. She emphasized that her last option is to pursue justice through the legal system to defend her rights and dignity.
The Ukrainian, who has frequently voiced concerns about the war in her homeland and its impact on her career, said the organization failed to offer her the support she needed during this period.
Tsurenko, currently ranked 239 in the world, previously withdrew from a match in 2023 following a panic attack after discussions with WTA officials about the association’s response to the ongoing war in Ukraine.
She described the WTA as a "terrifying and alien place," criticizing its decision to support a person in power rather than protect her as a player. Expressing deep disappointment, she said she hopes no other athlete endures similar treatment and called for accountability within the sport.
