World number one Jannik Sinner has been exonerated of any wrongdoing after testing positive for a banned substance twice in March. The Italian tennis star tested positive for low levels of a metabolite of clostebol, a steroid often used to build muscle mass, during the Indian Wells tournament. A subsequent test conducted eight days later also returned a positive result for the same metabolite. Despite the initial findings, Sinner was able to continue playing as he successfully contested a provisional suspension.
The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) conducted an investigation and concluded that Sinner was unintentionally contaminated with the substance by his physiotherapist, Giacomo Naldi. Naldi had been using an over-the-counter spray on a cut on his hand, which later transferred to Sinner during treatment sessions. The ITIA accepted this explanation, determining that the violation was not deliberate.
An independent tribunal reviewed the case and cleared Sinner of any fault or negligence. However, despite being cleared, Sinner will lose the ranking points and prize money he earned from his semi-final appearance at Indian Wells. Sinner expressed his relief in a statement, emphasizing his commitment to adhering to the ITIA's anti-doping regulations and his intention to move past this challenging period.
The decision not to sanction Sinner has sparked criticism on social media from several players, including Nick Kyrgios, Liam Broady, and Denis Shapovalov. Despite the controversy, Sinner is set to be the top seed at the upcoming US Open, which is scheduled to begin on Monday.
