Fulham has strongly denounced the racist and homophobic abuse directed at defender Calvin Bassey following their FA Cup victory over Manchester United. The Nigerian defender, who scored the opening goal at Old Trafford, shared examples of the offensive messages he received on social media.
In a statement, the club expressed full support for Bassey, calling the behavior "abhorrent" and vowing to collaborate with authorities to identify and punish those responsible.
The Premier League also condemned the abuse, stating it was "appalled" by the attacks on Bassey and reaffirming its commitment to working with social media platforms and authorities to ensure perpetrators face the harshest consequences.
This incident adds to a troubling pattern of discrimination in football, with other players, including Abdoulaye Doucoure, Kyle Walker, Joe Willock, and Khadija Shaw, having recently been subjected to similar treatment. Samuel Okafor, CEO of anti-discrimination group Kick It Out, recently described the issue as reaching a "crisis point" in English football.
Despite the controversy, Fulham secured their place in the FA Cup quarter-finals after a dramatic penalty shootout. Bruno Fernandes equalized for Manchester United in the second half, forcing extra time, but missed penalties from Victor Lindelof and Joshua Zirkzee handed Fulham the win. The Cottagers will now prepare to host Crystal Palace in the next round as they continue their cup campaign.
