Fran Kirby champions body positivity in women's football

Posted : 10 January 2024

Chelsea and England midfielder, Fran Kirby, 30, is raising awareness about body image issues in women's football, challenging the stigma around nutrition and the undue pressure on players regarding their appearance on TV.

Kirby initially addressed the issue in November, highlighting the challenges linked to the sport's increasing profile. Chelsea manager, Emma Hayes, commended Kirby for shedding light on problems related to "underfuelling and underloading," exacerbated by societal expectations and social media vitriol.

Kirby, who has faced comments about her weight, particularly during recovery from a heart condition and knee surgery, emphasizes the importance of separating body shape from fitness.

Despite struggling with injuries, Kirby remains resilient, stating that criticisms about her physique can impact both experienced athletes like herself and younger players, potentially affecting their performance. She stresses the need for support and guidance, acknowledging the role of more mature players in assisting those struggling with body image issues.

Sharing her personal journey, Kirby discusses her battles with injuries and illnesses, expressing the mental challenges of missing the 2023 Women's World Cup. Despite the setbacks, she maintains a positive mindset, driven by her love for the game and competitive nature.

Looking ahead, Kirby, with six months left on her Chelsea contract, expresses her desire to continue playing football at a high level, whether at Chelsea or elsewhere, underscoring her commitment to the sport and the friendships she has developed over the years.
