Former Spain women's soccer coach Jorge Vilda investigated in Rubiales case

Posted : 27 September 2023
Jorge Vilda, the former head coach of Spain's World Cup-winning women's soccer team, is now under investigation as part of the ongoing criminal case against Luis Rubiales, the president of the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF). Vilda's dismissal earlier this month was a result of the controversy surrounding Rubiales' behavior during the World Cup final on August 20.

The incident in question involved Rubiales kissing forward Jenni Hermoso, who has asserted that the kiss was not consensual. Rubiales is facing charges of sexual assault and coercion, which he vehemently denies.

Vilda is scheduled to appear before Spain's National Court on October 10 as part of this investigation. Spanish media reports indicate that he is being probed for his alleged involvement in coercing Hermoso. She claims that she, along with her family and friends, was pressured to defend Rubiales' actions, an accusation that Vilda has refuted.

In addition to Vilda, Albert Luque, the director of the men's national team, and Ruben Rivera, the RFEF's director of marketing, are also facing investigations in connection to this case, having been previously summoned as witnesses.

As a result of the ongoing investigation, Rubiales has been issued a restraining order that prevents him from coming within 200 meters of Jenni Hermoso. This case has brought significant scrutiny and attention to Spanish football, with players from both teams displaying a banner reading "It's over, our fight is the global fight" before a recent match in Cordoba to highlight the issue.
