Dani Alves has been sentenced to 4.5 years in prison by the Barcelona Supreme Court, more than a year after being arrested on suspicion of raping a young woman in a nightclub. The prosecution had initially sought the maximum sentence of 12 years, but Alves was ultimately convicted of sexual assault instead of rape.
Alongside the prison term, he is required to compensate the victim with €150,000 and faces restraining orders for 9 years, with 5 years of supervision post-release. The court concluded that the victim did not consent to sexual intercourse, and evidence supported the charge of sexual assault.
Despite Alves' denial of the rape allegations and his request for acquittal or a one-year sentence for sexual assault, the court reached its verdict. Alves had claimed innocence in interviews, asserting that the reported incident did not align with reality.
He stated that he was followed into a toilet stall but left the door open, maintaining a clear conscience and emphasizing he had never harmed anyone. Both parties have the option to appeal the decision.
Alves, a 40-year-old right-back considered one of the greatest defenders, won 42 trophies throughout his career, including three Champions League titles with Barcelona and two Copa América titles with Brazil. With 126 international appearances, he played in three World Cups, the last being in 2022.
Until the serious allegations arose, Alves played for Universedad Nacional in Mexico's top league, but the team released him following the public disclosure of the accusations. He has been in custody since January 20, 2023, with requests for temporary release denied over concerns of fleeing to Brazil, which lacks an extradition treaty with Spain. In a recent interview, Alves denied the accusations and expressed forgiveness toward the complainant.
