Chelsea Stands by Sam Kerr After Court Acquittal, FA to Review Incident

Posted : 14 February 2025

Chelsea manager Sonia Bompastor has confirmed that the club will not take any disciplinary action against striker Sam Kerr following her recent court case. The Australian captain was acquitted of racially abusing a British police officer after an altercation involving a cab driver two years ago.

Kerr, who was found not guilty by a jury at Kingston Crown Court, issued a statement apologizing for her choice of words during the incident, acknowledging that she had "expressed herself poorly." Bompastor stated that Kerr's apology was sufficient and emphasized the club’s full support for the player.

Despite being cleared in court, Kerr's actions have sparked debate in Australia, with some calling for her removal as captain of the Matildas. Football Australia (FA) admitted it was unaware of the legal case for more than a year until news emerged about her plea last March. In a statement, FA expressed its anticipation of Kerr’s return to football following her recovery from injury but also noted that it would take time to reflect with her on the lessons from the situation.

Kerr, who holds the record as Australia’s all-time top scorer with 69 international goals, has been sidelined for over a year due to a knee injury but has resumed training with Chelsea. Bompastor refrained from providing a specific timeline for her return to competitive play but confirmed that her rehabilitation was progressing well. Chelsea remains focused on supporting Kerr both on and off the pitch as she works towards regaining full fitness.
