Chelsea finalize £62.4 million transfer of Quenda, Essugo

Posted : 20 March 2025

Sporting CP has announced that Chelsea has completed the signings of Geovany Quenda and Dario Essugo for a combined transfer fee of approximately £62.4 million. The deal sees Quenda, a promising 17-year-old winger, join Chelsea for a fee that could rise to £44 million. Essugo, a defensive midfielder currently on loan at La Liga's Las Palmas, will make the move to Stamford Bridge for £18.4 million.

Quenda has been a standout performer for Sporting this season, playing a pivotal role in their attacking lineup. Despite his young age, he has already established himself as one of the most exciting talents at the club. With one goal and five assists in 26 league appearances this term, his potential has caught the attention of top European clubs.

Essugo, 20, has spent the season on loan at Las Palmas, impressing in Spain’s top division. The holding midfielder has made 17 appearances in La Liga, scoring one goal. His solid performances have convinced Chelsea of his ability to contribute to their midfield, and they are eager to bring him to England at the end of the current campaign.

The move also signifies Chelsea’s continued focus on strengthening their squad with talented young players. Quenda will remain with Sporting for the remainder of this season and next, allowing him to gain more first-team experience before joining Chelsea. This gives him the opportunity to further develop his skills in Portugal’s top flight.

Essugo, meanwhile, will complete his loan spell at Las Palmas before linking up with Chelsea’s first team. His addition to Chelsea’s midfield is expected to provide depth and competition in the holding role, complementing the club’s existing options.

Chelsea is not stopping there, with more promising young players set to join the squad. Estevao Willian and Kendry Paez will also make the move to Stamford Bridge, adding to the excitement around Chelsea’s future talent. Willian, a Brazilian forward, will join in June 2024, while Paez, an Ecuadorian midfielder, is set to arrive in June 2023.

The acquisitions of Quenda, Essugo, Willian, and Paez reflect Chelsea's strategy of building for the future. By investing in young talent, the club aims to develop a competitive team that can challenge for top honors in both domestic and international competitions in the years to come.
