Canadian Olympic Committee Apologizes for Drone Incident Over New Zealand Women's Football Training

Posted : 24 July 2024

The Canadian Olympic Committee has issued an apology following an incident where a member of Canada Soccer staff allegedly flew a drone over a New Zealand women's football team training session. The incident took place on Monday in St Etienne, ahead of the teams' Group A match in the Olympic football tournament on Thursday. The New Zealand Olympic Committee reported the incident to the police, resulting in the detention of the drone operator, and expressed their shock and disappointment.

The Canadian Olympic Committee confirmed that the detained individual was a "non-accredited member of the Canada Soccer support team." In a statement, they emphasized their commitment to fair play and extended heartfelt apologies to New Zealand Football, the affected players, and the New Zealand Olympic Committee. The COC also mentioned that they are reviewing the situation with the International Olympic Committee, Paris 2024, Canada Soccer, and FIFA to determine the next steps.

The New Zealand Olympic Committee has formally reported the incident to the IOC integrity unit and requested a full review from Canada. They reiterated their commitment to maintaining the integrity and fairness of the Olympic Games and expressed their deep shock and disappointment over the incident.

Team Canada, which won gold at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 under British manager Beverly Priestman, has promised to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident and provide further updates. The incident has cast a shadow over the spirit of fair play that the Olympic Games strive to uphold.
