Xavi expresses disappointment at Dembele's Paris Saint-Germain move, stating Barcelona cannot compete

Posted : 02 August 2023
Xavi has commented on Ousmane Dembele's impending move to Paris Saint-Germain, stating that Barcelona couldn't compete with their offer and there is no turning back for Dembele.

Xavi revealed that he talked to Dembele throughout the journey, and he seemed happy, but the decision to leave Barcelona was something personal for the player, and he didn't have a clear answer when asked why he was leaving.

Recent developments indicate that Barcelona and Dembele are set to part ways soon, with the French winger returning to France to sign a five-year deal with PSG.

Despite starting and scoring in the Clasico against Real Madrid in the United States, Dembele was not included in the squad for the match against Milan in Las Vegas, further hinting at his imminent departure.

During Xavi's tenure as coach, he managed to rehabilitate Dembele, who had faced numerous ups and downs during his six years at Barcelona, including injuries and criticism from fans. Xavi even convinced Dembele to extend his contract last summer. However, it appears that the player has made up his mind to join PSG.

Xavi reportedly tried to persuade Dembele to reject PSG's offer, using the example of Neymar, who returned to Barcelona after leaving for Paris. Unfortunately, Xavi's efforts were in vain, and Dembele will now join Neymar in the City of Light.

After the match against Milan, Xavi expressed disappointment in Dembele's decision, acknowledging that they couldn't match PSG's offer. He stated that Dembele had already spoken to PSG president Nasser Al Khelaifi and coach Luis Enrique, leaving no room for turning back.

Regarding the €50 million release clause in Dembele's contract, Xavi acknowledged that they were aware of it, and that's how the market works. He revealed that he spoke with Dembele throughout his trip to the United States, and the player seemed happy, which made his decision to leave even more unexpected.

Xavi also confirmed that Franck Kessie was not included in the squad for sensitivity reasons and not due to an imminent move like Dembele. However, it's evident that Kessie is also set to leave the club this summer after just one season. Xavi indicated that Kessie knows the situation and is not in the plans for the upcoming season.
