Bayer Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso expressed admiration for Florian Wirtz after the young German international scored twice in the club's commanding 5-0 victory over RB Salzburg in the Champions League. The performance earned Wirtz his fourth Player of the Match award in the competition this season, playing a key role in Leverkusen’s recovery following a tough 4-0 defeat to Liverpool and a 1-1 draw against Brest.
Alonso acknowledged Wirtz's importance to the team, emphasizing the need to support the 21-year-old and help him showcase his talents. The coach highlighted the player's unique qualities and stressed the importance of creating the right conditions for Wirtz to thrive in the Champions League, calling the competition ideal for his growth. "This competition is for him. He is a Champions League player," Alonso said.
Looking ahead, Alonso is optimistic about Leverkusen's prospects of advancing to the next round of the Champions League. He also pointed out that the team’s performance in the Bundesliga remains a work in progress. While their recent victory was encouraging, he believes there is still room for improvement in their overall play. "We want to build on that against Union (Berlin) on Saturday and maintain the level we have set ourselves," Alonso added.
Although Alonso is satisfied with their progress, he recognizes that consistency is key. The coach is keen to address any shortcomings and push the team to improve further as they aim to extend their strong run in the domestic league and continue their European campaign with more solid performances.
