In their debut appearance at the Women's World Cup, Zambia secured their first-ever victory with a 3-1 triumph over Costa Rica at Waikato Stadium on Monday. Although both teams had already been eliminated from contention for the knockout stage, it was a significant milestone for Zambia.
After suffering 5-0 defeats in their first two matches, Zambia finished third in Group C, while Japan claimed the top spot with a convincing 4-0 victory over Spain. On the other hand, Costa Rica finished at the bottom of the group without earning a single point in their three matches.
Zambia took an early lead as defender Lushomo Mweemba scored the fastest goal of the tournament with a spectacular volley just two minutes and 11 seconds into the game. The team extended their advantage when captain Barbra Banda calmly converted a penalty shortly after the half-hour mark. This penalty goal also marked the historic 1,000th goal in Women's World Cup history.
Costa Rica, participating in their second World Cup, were still in search of their first-ever win in the competition. They managed to reduce the deficit early in the second half when Melissa Herrera bundled the ball into the net after goalkeeper Catherine Musonda failed to clear it.
During the match, Costa Rica appealed for a penalty when midfielder Priscila Chinchilla collided with Musonda inside the box. However, after a lengthy VAR review, the penalty claim was denied as replays showed that forward Sheika Scott was in an offside position during the build-up to the incident.
Herrera thought she had scored again with around 20 minutes remaining, but the goal was disallowed for offside. Valeria Del Campo had a chance to level the score, but her effort went wide. In stoppage time, against the run of play, Zambia's Racheal Kundananji sealed the historic victory by scoring from Banda's cross.
This momentous win marked Zambia's first-ever success at the Women's World Cup and was a notable achievement for the team in their maiden appearance on the global stage.
