Women’s World Cup: Wang Shuang scored the winning goal for China against Haiti
Posted : 28 July 2023
China secured their first victory at the 2023 Women's World Cup by defeating Haiti in Group D, even though they played with only 10 players for over an hour. Despite the win, England, who beat Denmark 1-0 earlier on Friday, has not yet qualified for the last 16.
Midfielder Zhang Rui was shown a red card in the 29th minute for a dangerous knee-high challenge on Haiti's Sherly Jeudy. Despite being a player down, China managed to find the breakthrough with Wang Shuang converting a penalty in the 74th minute after a foul by Ruthny Mathurin on Zhang Linyan.
The victory means that England's advancement to the knockout stages would have been secured if China had drawn or lost to the 53rd-ranked Haiti side. However, England will now have to wait until the last matches in the group, which will take place on Tuesday.
In those matches, group leaders England, with six points, will face China, while Denmark will take on Haiti at the same time. The results of these games will determine the final standings in Group D and which teams progress to the last 16 of the tournament.
