Women’s World Cup: USA narrowly escape dropping from last 16 in tensed match against Portugal
Posted : 01 August 2023
The USA, the defending champions in the Women's World Cup, faced a nerve-wracking match against debutants Portugal before narrowly advancing to the last 16.
The Stars and Stripes have struggled to find their form in the tournament, having previously been held to a draw by the Netherlands. This latest frustrating draw has raised doubts about their chances of securing an unprecedented third consecutive title.
Portugal, on the other hand, had the opportunity to cause one of the biggest upsets in the competition's history and came close when Ana Capeta hit the post in the 91st minute.
Ultimately, the USA breathed a sigh of relief when the final whistle blew, securing a point that was enough to place them as runners-up in their group, with the Netherlands finishing on top after a convincing 7-0 victory over Vietnam.
However, the United States once again failed to perform at their best, struggling to break down Portugal's determined defense. Portuguese goalkeeper Ines Pereira made two impressive saves to deny the recalled forward Lynn Williams.
Moving forward, the world's top-ranked team will face the winners of Group G in the next stage. Group G's winner will be determined on Wednesday, with Sweden poised to finish on top unless there is a significant goal difference.
It was a frustrating night for the four-time world champions in Auckland, with midfielder Rose Lavelle receiving a booking and subsequently being suspended for the next game due to her second caution of the tournament.
The USA entered the tournament as clear favorites to win, but they have failed to impress so far, leaving their supporters disappointed. They conclude the group stage with five points, two points behind the Netherlands, raising questions about their level of performance compared to their dominant displays in the 2015 and 2019 World Cups.
Despite their exit, Portugal departs the competition with their heads held high. They made history by qualifying for their first World Cup and showcased their potential by going toe-to-toe with strong opponents.
Although they missed out on advancing to the knockout stage by a narrow margin, their performance will be seen as a step forward for the development of women's football in their country.
