Posted : 31 July 2023
Japan demonstrated their status as serious contenders at the Women's World Cup with an impressive victory over Spain, securing the top spot in Group C and earning a place in the last-16 to face Norway.
The 2011 world champions showcased their dominance by scoring three goals before half-time, with Hinata Miyazawa netting twice, taking her total to four goals, making her the leading scorer of the tournament.
Miyazawa opened the scoring with a composed finish after exploiting Spain's defensive vulnerabilities, followed by Riko Ueki doubling the lead with a deflected shot that looped into the net. Miyazawa then struck again, firing a powerful shot across the goal to make it 3-0, much to the delight of the 20,957 spectators.
In the 82nd minute, substitute Mina Tanaka added further misery for Spain by securing a fourth goal for Japan.
Before the match, Japan and Spain had both started with 100% winning records in New Zealand, with Japan slightly trailing Spain on goal difference. However, Japan's remarkable performance propelled them to victory, setting up a clash with Norway, the 1995 world champions, in the last-16.
In contrast, Spain, as Group C runners-up, will face Switzerland at Eden Park in Auckland in their last-16 encounter.
Japan's performance was nothing short of formidable. They made five changes to the team that triumphed over Costa Rica five days prior, yet they effortlessly took control of the match in Wellington, New Zealand's capital. Despite facing a Spain side high on confidence after consecutive wins, Japan displayed exceptional finishing and sheer power in their gameplay.
Hinata Miyazawa was a standout player, not only scoring twice but also providing the assist for Ueki's goal. Her impactful presence on the field will be vital as Japan aims to reach the quarter-finals for the first time since 2015.
The fans in Wellington came out in large numbers, with some donning colorful masks and national costumes, witnessing a masterclass from their formidable team, securing a third successive win in New Zealand.
