Women's World Cup: Gianni Infantino, the president of FIFA, threatens a European tournament blackout

Posted : 02 May 2023
Gianni Infantino, the president of FIFA, has threatened to veto TV companies' improved rights proposals or the Women's World Cup would not be broadcast in five European nations.

A "slap in the face" to the players and "all women globally," according to Infantino, were the "disappointing" proposals from the UK, Spain, Italy, Germany, and France.

FIFA has a moral and legal duty to not undersell the tournament, he continued.

Beginning on July 20, the World Cup will be jointly hosted by Australia and New Zealand.

Infantino said that European broadcasters had bid between $1 million and $10 million (£800,000 and £8 million) for the rights, as opposed to between $100 million and $200 million for the men's World Cup.

"Should the offers continue not to be fair, we will be forced not to broadcast the FIFA Women's World Cup into the 'big five' European countries," Infantino said at a World Trade Organization meeting in Geneva.

"I call, therefore, on all players, fans, football officials, presidents, prime ministers, politicians and journalists all over the world to join us and support this call for a fair remuneration of women's football. Women deserve it, as simple as that."

Scotland will play England in the Women's Nations League.

The men's World Cup and other events were included in rights proposals for earlier competitions, but FIFA has since split the bidding process.
