Women's World Cup: France struggles to find rhythm in goalless draw against Jamaica

Posted : 23 July 2023
In the opening Group F clash at the Women's World Cup, France was held to a goalless draw by a determined Jamaica side at Sydney Football Stadium. The fifth-ranked French team struggled to find their rhythm as Jamaica's hardworking players constantly hassled and disrupted their play throughout the match.

Forward Kadidiatou Diani came close to securing a late winner for France with a powerful header in the 90th minute, but her effort hit the bar and post, much to the delight of the nearly 40,000 crowd who had embraced the underdogs, ranked 43rd.

France coach Herve Renard acknowledged the challenge posed by the athletic Jamaican players and credited their defensive efforts. Despite creating chances in the second half, France was unable to find the back of the net.

For Jamaica, the draw was a historic achievement, earning them their first-ever World Cup point after three losses in their debut tournament in 2019. Coach Lorne Donaldson described the result as their finest football moment and celebrated the players' performance.

France skipper Wendie Renard and Jamaica's star player Khadija Shaw both suffered a clash of heads early in the match but returned to play after receiving medical attention. Shaw was a constant threat to the French defense with her direct running and physicality.

As the rain poured down on the pitch, France gradually took control of the game in the second half, creating opportunities through Diani and Sandie Toletti. However, they couldn't break the deadlock, and Jamaica's outstanding left-back Deneisha Blackwood led the way in keeping them at bay.

Jamaica was dealt a blow when Shaw received a second caution and was sent off deep into stoppage time for a tackle on Renard. The result leaves Group F wide open, with France set to face Brazil in a crucial match, while Jamaica will take on Panama in their next fixture.
