Women's World Cup: England defeat Denmark, advance to last 16

Posted : 28 July 2023
England's Women's World Cup campaign took a positive turn as they secured a much-improved performance to defeat Denmark and edge closer to last 16 qualification. Lauren James, making her first World Cup start, made a significant impact with a superb strike from the edge of the box just six minutes into the game, ultimately becoming the decider in Sydney.

Unfortunately, the victory was marred by a serious-looking injury to key midfielder Keira Walsh. The Barcelona midfielder went down under minimal contact and immediately signaled to the dugout, indicating a potential knee injury. Walsh was visibly in pain and had to be stretchered off after 38 minutes, leaving Lionesses' supporters concerned.

Despite the setback, England maintained their lead at halftime, which was well-deserved given their improved attacking performance. Lauren James continued to impress, showcasing the creativity and unpredictability that has made her a standout in the Women's Super League this season. Her impact on the game makes her deserving of a regular starting position with the national team.

Denmark capitalized on the change of mood after Walsh's injury, creating opportunities, but they struggled to test England's goalkeeper Mary Earps enough. Substitute Amalie Vangsgaard came close to equalizing with a header against the post, but England held on.

With a victory over China in the other Group D match, England will secure a spot in the last 16. Denmark, on the other hand, will face Haiti in their final group match and still have a chance to qualify. The Lionesses' performance has shown promise, but the injury to Walsh remains a concern as they progress in the tournament.
