Women's World Cup 2023: New Zealand players leave the hotel following fire outbreak

Posted : 23 July 2023
The Football Ferns, New Zealand's national women's football team, faced a series of challenges ahead of their participation in the global stage. They woke up to news of a deadly shooting in Auckland, followed by securing a historic first win in a football tournament.

Emotions ran high among the players after their victory. However, the team's celebrations were short-lived when they had to evacuate their hotel due to a suspected arson attack. The co-hosts were moved to a different location in Auckland before being allowed to return to the hotel.

Defender CJ Bott and forward Gabi Rennie addressed the media ahead of their Group A game against the Philippines, aiming to put the recent disruptions behind them.

Bott expressed the devastating impact of the fire incident on the team but mentioned that it was not directed at the team, FIFA, or the FIFA Women's World Cup. A 34-year-old has been charged with burglary and arson in connection with the incident, and fortunately, no players or staff were injured.

The arson attack occurred just two days after a shooting near a fan park where football supporters were gathering, resulting in two deaths and six injuries.

Despite the unfortunate incidents, the opening match of the tournament saw New Zealand's victory against Norway, boosting the team's confidence.

The Football Ferns aim to make their nation proud by reaching the knockout stages of the World Cup for the first time.

Bott acknowledged the whirlwind of emotions following their win against Norway and emphasized that they are now focused on facing the Philippines.

The players understand the pressure on them to perform well, but they are motivated to inspire their nation and showcase football to the people of New Zealand.

The team is determined to build on their success and continue their journey in the tournament.
