Women's World Cup 2023: England players halt performance bonuses discussions; Football Association and PFA reach no resolution
Posted : 18 July 2023
Ahead of this summer's Women's World Cup, the England players have decided to pause discussions regarding performance-related bonuses. Some nations have already agreed on bonuses for their players, but as of now, the Lionesses have not reached a resolution.
The Football Association (FA) and the Professional Footballers' Association (PFA) have been in talks regarding this matter, but a suitable agreement has not been reached yet. However, the players have expressed their disappointment and intention to revisit the issue after the tournament.
Despite the unresolved bonus situation, the players are committed to growing the game and representing their nation with dedication on the field. They believe that their performance in the World Cup will contribute to their efforts in promoting women's football.
This year, for the first time in a Women's World Cup, players will receive individual payments directly from FIFA. The payments vary based on their team's performance, ranging from £23,500 for teams eliminated in the group stage to £211,000 for the tournament winners. This new model guarantees payments for players from all participating nations.
The FA had previously offered bonuses to the Lionesses, but it seems that FIFA's direct payments are now seen as a suitable replacement by the organization. However, the players feel that some rival nations, like Australia, the United States, and Spain, are outshining England by providing additional bonuses to their players.
While the issues are specific to the negotiations with the FA, the Lionesses' stance aligns with players from other countries at the World Cup who are standing up for their rights and pushing for parity and progress. Despite the pause in discussions, the players' commitment to the game remains steadfast as they prepare to kick off their campaign in the tournament.
