Women's Champions League semifinal: Wolfsburg and Arsenal tie after Arsenal had grace of a two-goal lead
Posted : 24 April 2023
Arsenal tied Wolfsburg in the first leg of their Women's Champions League semifinal in Germany after falling behind by two goals.
Arsenal's quest for a second European championship was maintained when striker Stina Blackstenius equalized in the second half after putting in a relentless performance.
The visitors defense made a few errors, which let Wolfsburg grab a well-deserved 2-0 lead after just 24 minutes, nearly punishing the Gunners for a terrible first half.
Ewa Pajor, who leads the league in goals scored, scored her eighth goal in the Champions League this year when her dash into the area went unnoticed and she calmly slid it past Manuela Zinsberger.
Following Sveindis Jane Jonsdottir's close-range strike for Wolfsburg's second goal thanks to Rafaelle Souza's poor mistake, the Arsenal defender made apologies with a thunderous header right before halftime.
Following that goal, Arsenal improved in the second half, limiting Wolfsburg's opportunities and increasing their danger at the opposite end.
When Blackstenius was set up by Victoria Pelova, it paid off, giving Arsenal a chance to go to the final when they host the second leg on Monday, May 1.
However, Jonas Eidevall's injury-riddled team will need to improve since they were shaky defensively and far from their flowing best, as seen by the magnificent quarter-final victory against Bayern.
Key players Kim Little and Leah Williamson were ruled out with significant injuries this week, dealing the Gunners a heavy blow. It showed in Germany, but Arsenal's resiliency was completely on display.
