Wolves Punish Sloppy Spurs to Edge Closer to Premier League Safety

Posted : 13 April 2025

Wolverhampton Wanderers boosted their Premier League survival hopes with a spirited 4-2 victory over Tottenham Hotspur at Molineux. Wolves capitalized on Spurs' heavily rotated lineup, which saw manager Ange Postecoglou make six changes ahead of a decisive Europa League clash.

Rayan Ait-Nouri opened the scoring just two minutes in, reacting quickly to a poor clearance by goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario. A bizarre own goal followed, as Vicario’s save deflected off teammate Djed Spence and into the net, giving Wolves a comfortable first-half lead.

Although Tottenham responded through Mathys Tel’s close-range finish after the break, Wolves immediately reasserted control. Ait-Nouri danced past Cristian Romero and set up Jorgen Strand Larsen for a simple finish, marking the striker’s fourth consecutive game with a goal.

Richarlison gave Spurs late hope with a scrappy goal after Jose Sa's save rebounded off the bar, but Wolves sealed the win in the dying moments when Matheus Cunha, fresh from suspension, capitalized on a Spurs mistake and scored on a swift counterattack.

Wolves boss Vitor Pereira earned plaudits for orchestrating the team’s revival, having now secured four straight league wins. His arrival in December has transformed the club’s fortunes, collecting 26 points — more than the combined total of the current bottom three.

The squad’s cohesion was on full display at the final whistle, as players and staff celebrated with fans. Ait-Nouri and Cunha stood out, while Strand Larsen's form continued to mirror that of former Wolves striker Henri Camara.

For Spurs, the defeat further exposed familiar defensive vulnerabilities and poor decision-making under pressure. Postecoglou, who now faces rising pressure over his role, saw his side fall to a 17th league defeat of the season.

With key players like Son Heung-min and Micky van de Ven rested, the team lacked both defensive solidity and attacking inspiration. Thursday’s return leg against Eintracht Frankfurt in the Europa League now takes on immense importance, with the season’s direction — and perhaps Postecoglou’s future — hanging in the balance.
