Wolves manager predicts Matheus Nunes stays beyond transfer deadline, Manchester City abandons bid

Gary O'Neil, the manager of Wolverhampton Wanderers, anticipates that Matheus Nunes will remain at the club beyond the transfer deadline day on Friday, as Manchester City is reportedly inclined to abandon their pursuit of the player.
Manchester City, the current Premier League leaders, submitted a bid of £47 million for the 25-year-old Portuguese international last week, which was subsequently rejected by Wolves. However, City now deems Wolves' valuation of Nunes as unattainable.
Matheus Nunes, a midfielder, has been notably absent from training sessions recently. Addressing this absence, O'Neil remarked, "He's not with the group at the moment, his choice."
Wolves are understood to be seeking over £60 million for Nunes, who has expressed a desire to join Pep Guardiola's squad. O'Neil clarified, "After the bid from Manchester City he decided it was best for him not to be with the group. Club policy, and how we deal with things like that, is set in place."
As of now, there hasn't been an improved bid for Nunes. O'Neil emphasized that Nunes remains a Wolves player, possessing a long-standing contract with the club. O'Neil expects Nunes to remain with the team beyond September 2.
The upcoming days are expected to be crucial, as private discussions between O'Neil and Nunes will likely shape the resolution of the situation.
Manchester City initially sought to strengthen their midfield with West Ham's Lucas Paqueta, yet allegations related to betting have prompted a potential revisit of this pursuit in January if the situation is satisfactorily resolved.
While Wolves have shown interest in City's midfielder Tommy Doyle, any potential move in this direction would likely hinge on Nunes' departure.
Last summer, Wolves secured Nunes on a five-year contract from Sporting Lisbon, breaking their club record with a £38 million fee. Nunes played a pivotal role in Wolves' successful relegation avoidance campaign last season, contributing to their 13th-place finish in the league standings.
