Wolves, Aston Villa share points in West Midlands Derby

Posted : 08 October 2023

Wolves and Aston Villa played out a closely contested match that ended in a 1-1 draw at Molineux. The game burst to life with two quick second-half goals.

Hwang Hee-chan opened the scoring for Wolves early in the second half, converting Pedro Neto's cross with a near-post poke, marking Wolves' first shot on target in the match. However, Villa responded swiftly, with defender Pau Torres netting his first goal for the club just two minutes later.

The first half had been characterized by a lack of goalmouth action and a feisty atmosphere in the West Midlands derby. Referee Rob Jones had his hands full with yellow cards outnumbering shots on target. Villa's Matty Cash had the only notable chance in the opening 10 minutes, but his effort was straight at Wolves' goalkeeper Jose Sa.

The second-half goals injected excitement into the game, and Wolves had a golden opportunity to snatch victory late on when Sasa Kalajdzic set up Pedro Neto, but the Portuguese forward lacked composure as he blazed over from eight yards out.

Wolves had to hold on during 12 minutes of stoppage time, playing most of it with only 10 men after Mario Lemina received a second yellow card. In the dying moments, Villa's Ollie Watkins saw his header denied by the woodwork. The draw moved Wolves up to 14th place, while Villa remained in fifth heading into the international break.
