Wolverhampton Wanderers 2-1 Manchester City: Wolves halt Manchester City's unbeaten streak
Posted : 30 September 2023
Wolverhampton Wanderers put an end to Manchester City's flawless Premier League season start by handing the league leaders their inaugural defeat of the campaign.
The turning point in the match came when Ruben Dias, a City defender, inadvertently redirected a Pedro Neto cross into his own net. Neto, the Wolves winger, exhibited remarkable pace as he sprinted past City's defense, leaving Nathan Ake in his wake.
Throughout the first half, City grappled with Neto's blistering speed on the flanks, with Wolves consistently applying pressure.
Despite trailing at halftime, City responded swiftly in the second half when Julian Alvarez expertly curled a free-kick past Wolves' goalkeeper, Jose Sa.
However, Hwang Hee-chan swiftly restored Wolves' lead, displaying composure as he calmly slotted the ball into the net after receiving an unmarked pass from Matheus Cunha in the box.
Pep Guardiola's squad remains perched atop the league standings despite the setback. However, their position could be jeopardized if Liverpool secures victory over Tottenham in the late Saturday fixture.
Wolves currently occupy the 13th spot in the league, amassing seven points from seven matches.
