Real Madrid defeated Celta 2-0 on Saturday at the Santiago Bernabeu thanks to goals from Marco Asensio and Eder Militao, cutting Barcelona's advantage atop LaLiga to eight points.
Real, in second place, maintained their tenuous title aspirations by climbing to 65 points with eight games left. Barca will visit third-placed Atletico Madrid on Sunday because they have a game in hand.
Atletico, who are in fine form with a six-game winning streak and an unbeaten run of 13 La Liga games, are 13 points behind Barcelona and 5 points ahead of Real. With 36 points, Celta is ranked 12th overall.
Real was slow to apply pressure on the visitors, making for a tepid start to the game. But when they got more aggressive, Vinicius Jr. and Asensio were the ones controlling the situation.
Midway through the first half, Real was comfortably up and moving the ball around Celta's penalty area, but they failed to complete the necessary pass.
They didn't have a shot on goal until 42 minutes had passed, but Asensio took advantage of the opportunity to score the game's first goal with a one-touch strike from the centre of the box after Vinicius had run down the left and whipped in a low cross for the Spain international.
After the halftime, defender Militao sealed the victory by diving at a corner kick from Asensio and scoring with an unstoppable soaring header from close range.
After that, Real relaxed a bit since they were confident they could finish the game with a lead.
Real are counting on a victory from their city rivals on Sunday to spice up LaLiga's last few weeks because their Champions League semi-final first leg against Manchester City is just three days after they face Osasuna in the Copa del Rey final in May.
