Will Nottingham Forest extend Ola Aina’s contract after mistake?

Posted : 25 February 2025

Ola Aina, a Super Eagles and Nottingham Forest full-back, is approaching the final months of his contract at the City Ground, with just four months remaining on his current deal.

The 28-year-old defender signed with Forest in the summer of 2023 on a one-year contract, which includes an option for an additional season. Aina’s recent performance against Newcastle United saw him concede a penalty after a handball, leading to a goal from Aleksandar Isak. This incident sparked frustration among Forest supporters. However, throughout his time at the club, Aina has been a dependable player, making 48 appearances, scoring three goals, and providing two assists.

Forest’s manager, Nuno Espírito Santo, has emphasized his desire to retain key players and has already secured contract extensions for Murillo and striker Chris Wood. While Aina’s future remains uncertain, the Portuguese coach has expressed confidence that there are no major concerns regarding his contract situation.

Speaking on the matter, Nuno reassured fans that the club’s management is handling the situation properly. He stated that Aina, alongside Murillo and Wood, has been performing well and that the club aims to create a positive environment for players to thrive. According to the coach, ensuring that players feel comfortable is a priority, and discussions about contracts will be handled accordingly.

Aina himself has expressed his satisfaction with life at Nottingham Forest. He has openly stated his desire to continue playing for the club despite reported interest from other teams. In an interview with Sky Sports before the Newcastle match, he mentioned that he enjoys the club’s atmosphere, staff, and community, reinforcing his wish to stay.

With both the club and the player showing interest in continuing their partnership, a contract renewal seems likely. Even if negotiations stall, the existing clause allows for an automatic extension of his deal for another season. However, Nottingham Forest, currently in the Premier League’s top three, will need to maintain their strong performances as they aim for a UEFA Champions League qualification spot.

Despite the extension option, Aina has attracted interest from major European clubs, including Manchester City, AC Milan, and Roma. If a compelling offer arrives in the summer, the Nigerian defender could consider a move away from Forest.
