Wilfred Ndidi shares concerning news about being stranded at airport

Posted : 14 October 2024

Wilfred Ndidi voiced his frustration over an unforeseen delay that he and his Nigerian teammates faced while traveling to their Africa Cup of Nations qualifier. The Leicester City midfielder was part of the squad that secured a narrow 1-0 victory against Libya last Friday, with Fisayo Dele-Bashiru scoring the decisive goal. In the wake of this match, Libya raised complaints regarding their treatment, leading to heightened tensions between the two teams ahead of their upcoming encounter.

As the Nigerian team prepared for their next fixture, they found themselves in a difficult situation. Reports surfaced indicating that their chartered flight had been unexpectedly diverted by the Libyan government to Al-Abraq Airport, rather than taking them directly to Benghazi, where the match was scheduled. This diversion left the team stranded at an airport that is still a four-hour journey away from their intended destination.

In light of these circumstances, Nigerian players expressed their discontent with the handling of their situation. Ndidi took to social media to share his thoughts, posting on his Instagram story that the experience was "not football" and calling it "very embarrassing." He emphasized the distressing nature of being treated like "hostages" while representing their country.

Teammate Victor Boniface added to the concerns, revealing that the team had already spent 13 hours at the airport without any provision for food, Wi-Fi, or a place to rest. This lack of basic amenities compounded their frustration and highlighted the challenges faced by the players during this unforeseen delay.

The situation has generated significant anger among the Nigerian squad, who feel they have been poorly treated. As they await resolution and the opportunity to travel to their next match, the players hope for improved conditions and support from the authorities involved.
