Why Cyriel Dessers stayed at Rangers in January transfer window

Posted : 06 February 2025

Cyriel Dessers, the Nigerian striker playing for Rangers, remained at Ibrox despite receiving offers from multiple clubs due to challenges in the transfer market.

The 30-year-old forward lost his starting position in November, as Moroccan U-23 player Hamza Igamane took his place and impressed with strong performances.

Eager for more playing time, Dessers attracted interest from several clubs, and he even considered a return to the Dutch Eredivisie to secure regular minutes.

However, he managed to revive his role at Rangers, starting the last three matches under manager Philippe Clement. His agent, Stijn Francis, explained that a transfer did not materialize because, despite ten offers, the winter market was difficult.

Francis revealed that most clubs were interested in signing Dessers on loan, but Rangers were only willing to consider a permanent sale, making negotiations more complex.

Ironically, despite being the player with the most transfer interest at Rangers, Dessers remained at the club, while others like Kieran Dowell, Rabbi Matondo, and Adam Devine secured loan moves elsewhere.

Now forming a promising attacking partnership with Igamane, Dessers has embraced the challenge, expressing his determination to succeed at Rangers, where he has already scored 18 goals and provided five assists in 37 appearances this season.
