West Ham Tops Manchester United, Chelsea Edges Newcastle

Posted : 27 October 2024

West Ham delivered a blow to Manchester United's struggling season with a thrilling 2-1 victory on Sunday, further intensifying the pressure on manager Erik ten Hag. The defeat marks United's fourth in nine league matches, raising concerns about ten Hag's future at the helm. Meanwhile, Chelsea also achieved a 2-1 win over Newcastle United, with Cole Palmer playing a pivotal role in their resurgence following a previous loss to Liverpool.

Despite dominating much of the first half, United failed to convert their chances at the London Stadium. Alejandro Garnacho struck the woodwork early in the match, and Edson Alvarez hit his own crossbar. The most glaring miss came from Diogo Dalot, who inexplicably shot over the bar with the goal at his mercy after rounding West Ham's goalkeeper, Lukasz Fabianski. This lack of finishing has become a recurring issue for ten Hag's side, further compounding their struggles in the league.

In an effort to turn the tide, West Ham's manager, Julen Lopetegui, made three substitutions at halftime in response to a lackluster first-half performance. His changes paid off when Crysencio Summerville scored against the run of play in the 74th minute.

United managed to equalize through Casemiro's header nine minutes from the end, but the match took another turn when VAR intervened to penalize Matthijs de Ligt for a foul on Danny Ings. Jarrod Bowen converted the resulting penalty, handing West Ham a crucial win that propelled them above United in the standings.

Chelsea, fresh off their first league defeat under coach Enzo Maresca, returned to winning form with their own 2-1 victory over Newcastle. Palmer was instrumental throughout the match, initially having a goal ruled out for offside within the first five minutes. His vision set up the opening goal, as he played a brilliant ball over the top to Pedro Neto, who then assisted Nicolas Jackson for his sixth goal of the season.

Newcastle managed to equalize before halftime, with Alexander Isak scoring from a well-worked cross by Lewis Hall. However, Palmer quickly restored Chelsea's lead just two minutes into the second half with a powerful shot that beat Newcastle's goalkeeper, Nick Pope.

The Magpies' frustrations continued, as Isak squandered a golden opportunity to level the score again later in the match. In a separate clash, Crystal Palace secured their first win of the season with a 1-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur, who have struggled away from home this season, placing them eighth in the league table.
