Saints are in serious trouble after West Ham United's 1-0 victory over Southampton lifted them out of the bottom three of the Premier League.
The visitors arrived in London in decent form and with confidence after their most recent game ended in a comeback tie with Tottenham, but their expectations were crushed once they arrived.
Midway through the first half, Moroccan defender Nayef Aguerd scored the game's lone goal with an exceptional header, although West Ham had to wait more than three minutes for VAR to formally pronounce it as such.
Romain Perraud of Southampton almost scored an immediate equalizer, but Lukasz Fabianski, who was controversially reinstated to the starting lineup in place of Alphonse Areola, dived down quickly to block the attempt.
Saints had a few strong stretches, but Fabianski seldom faced a goal-scoring threat.
In the Saints' midfield, Romeo Lavia once again excelled, superbly regaining ball time and time again, although he was virtually by himself in propelling his side forward.
With the win, West Ham moves up to 14th while Southampton drops to last. Saints have played more games than any other side in the bottom seven, but they are also three points below Leeds in 17th position and have a far worse goal differential.
