In a highly anticipated moment, Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, owners of the Welsh team Wrexham, were joined by their friend, actor Hugh Jackman, in the stands as the team made its long-awaited return to the English Fourth Division (Ligue 2) after 15 years. Despite the final result not going in Wrexham's favor, the X-Men star seemed to relish every minute of the match.
The game got off to a rough start for Wrexham, with Milton Keynes Dons taking an early 2-0 lead, courtesy of an own goal by Eugene O'Connell in the sixth minute and another goal by Mohammed Aysa just four minutes later.
Wrexham managed to pull one back just before halftime through Jacob Mendy (43rd minute), but two goals by Jonathan Lacco (64th and 51st minutes) further dampened the team's spirits. Despite late efforts by Jordan Davies (82nd minute) and Anthony Ford (93rd minute), Milton Keyn
es Dons secured a 5-3 victory, sealing the disappointing debut for Wrexham.
The real highlight of the day, however, was the presence of Hugh Jackman, who expressed his excitement on social media, sharing pictures of himself with Reynolds and McElhenney. "I finally got an invitation. Thank you, Rex," he tweeted, showing his support for the team's owners and their project.
Wrexham's journey under the ownership of Reynolds and McElhenney has been documented in a docuseries titled "Welcome to Wrexham." After narrowly missing promotion last season, the team secured a dramatic ending to their campaign with a thrilling 1-3 victory over Boreham Wood, earning them the long-awaited promotion.
Despite the tough start in Ligue 2, Wrexham is determined to bounce back. Their next challenge is in the League Cup against Wigan, scheduled for Tuesday. The team will then strive to secure their first points in the league when they face Wimbledon a week later. With the backing of their famous owners and the support of Hollywood stars like Hugh Jackman, Wrexham is looking to make a mark in the English Fourth Division and create a story fit for the big screen.
