Sporting Lagos breathed a sigh of relief during the 2023/2024 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) Match Day 32 as they battled against the visiting Abia Warriors in a thrilling five-goal encounter.
The match, held at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, saw the host, the Noisy Lagosians, playing with a more aggressive instinct from the start. The Tech Boys secured an early lead in the 4th minute, with Paschal putting his team ahead barely five minutes into the game.
Ace striker Junior Lokosa had a chance to double the lead in the 10th minute as he skillfully maneuvered past two defenders, but his shot was bravely blocked by the opposition. However, Lokosa redeemed himself later in the match, doubling the scoreline to 2-0 with a smart near-post finish.
Abia Warriors, however, quickly responded with two goals of their own in the 48th and 52nd minutes, leveling the playing field. The momentum swung back in Sporting Lagos' favor when substitute Jonathan Alukwu found the net with his first touch of the game in the 61st minute.
Abia Warriors had an opportunity to further reduce the scoreline after a penalty was awarded for a foul in the box. However, the Noisy Lagosians' goalkeeper, Christian Nwoke, emerged as the hero by saving the penalty and preserving his team's lead.
Paschal sealed the victory for Sporting Lagos with a powerful run and an assist to Jonathan, who completed his brace with the third goal of the match. Despite the defeat, the coach of Abia Warriors acknowledged the efforts of his players, although he expressed disappointment with the outcome, stating that the game did not meet his standards.
"We gave our all to win the game, but unfortunately, things did not go our way," he remarked, highlighting the team's commitment despite the unfavorable result.
