"We deserved more," laments Super Eagles defender on Fulham draw

Posted : 02 December 2024

Super Eagles and Fulham defender Calvin Bassey expressed disappointment after his team managed only a draw against Tottenham Hotspur, insisting that they deserved to claim all three points. Fulham’s efforts followed a crushing 4-1 home defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers in their previous game, which left fans at Craven Cottage frustrated and eager for a better performance.

In their bid for redemption, Fulham adopted an aggressive approach against Ange Postecoglu's Spurs. Nigerian international Alex Iwobi was pivotal in the game, creating two chances and nearly scoring, only to be denied by the crossbar. Fulham showed determination to bounce back from their recent setback.

Tom Cairney entered the fray in the 62nd minute and made an immediate impact, equalizing after Brennan Johnson had given Spurs the lead. Iwobi's excellent hold-up play set up the chance for Cairney’s goal. However, the joy was short-lived as Cairney received a red card for a rash tackle on Dejan Kulusevski about twenty minutes later, leaving Fulham to finish the match with ten men.

After the game, Bassey shared his thoughts on Fulham’s performance, admitting his frustration at the missed opportunities. “It’s a tough one to take because I think we deserved more,” he told Fulham TV. “Fraser Forster made three excellent saves that could have been goals for us. We were a bit unlucky.”

The defender also highlighted how the red card disrupted Fulham’s momentum but praised his team for staying composed despite the disadvantage. “Even after the sending off, we managed the game well and avoided conceding late goals, something that has troubled us in past matches. Our response was solid, and we kept our focus,” Bassey said.

Reflecting on the team’s overall approach, Bassey emphasized their confidence in their playing style and trust in manager Marco Silva’s strategies. “We believe in what we’re doing, and even though we take risks, it has brought us success. It’s disappointing not to win, but we’ve shown that we can compete with strong teams,” he remarked.

Fulham now turns their focus to a busy week ahead, starting with a home game against Brighton and Hove Albion on Thursday, followed by a match against Arsenal at Craven Cottage on Sunday. Bassey hopes the team can build on their improved performance and continue to regain the fans' trust and support.
