Wayne Rooney takes helm as Birmingham City's new manager

Birmingham City has appointed Wayne Rooney as their new manager. The 37-year-old former England captain has signed a three-and-a-half-year deal with the Championship club. This decision comes after the sacking of Blues head coach John Eustace, who served for 15 months.
Wayne Rooney's appointment is the first managerial change made by Blues' new American owners, Shelby Companies Limited, who took over in July.
Rooney will have the support of his former England teammate and current England Under-21 assistant Ashley Cole, along with his former Manchester United colleague John O'Shea, who is the assistant coach of the Republic of Ireland men's national team. Carl Robinson and Pete Shuttleworth, who previously worked with Rooney at DC United, will also join his backroom staff.
This marks Wayne Rooney's third managerial role, following his time at the MLS club and Derby County. Birmingham City's co-owner and chairman, Tom Wagner, expressed confidence in Rooney's abilities, stating that he is a "born winner" and emphasizing that his playing philosophy aligns with the club's ambitions.
Rooney, who retired from playing and was appointed as Derby boss in January 2021, expressed his excitement about joining Birmingham City during a pivotal moment for the club. He noted that the club's plan and commitment to their ambitions were clear, and he is aligned with their expectations. Rooney is determined to create a winning culture and elevate the club to the next level, working to implement his coaching philosophy and deliver on the expectations set for him.
